📖 2. Vocabulary Skills

Finding Word Meanings

Use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words.

"The fierce dog barked loudly." Fierce means dangerous or aggressive.
Find the meaning: The tiny ant carried a huge crumb. tiny = __________

Synonyms and Antonyms

Synonyms: Words with similar meanings (big = large)

Antonyms: Words with opposite meanings (big = small)

Happy ↔ Sad | Fast ↔ Slow | Hot ↔ Cold | Big ↔ Small

What is Inference?

Using clues from the text + what you already know to figure out something not directly stated.

Read between the lines!
Text: "Tom put on his coat, hat, and gloves."
Inference: It must be cold outside.

"Sarah woke up and looked out the window. The ground was covered in white. She grabbed her sled and ran outside."
1. What season is it?
2. How do you know?
Answers: 1) Winter, 2) Snow on ground, sled suggests playing in snow

Putting Events in Order

Look for time words: first, next, then, finally, after, before, last

"First, Mum cracked the eggs. Next, she beat them in a bowl. Then, she added flour and milk. Finally, she poured the mixture into a pan and cooked it."
What did Mum make first?
Answer: She cracked the eggs first.

Finding the Main Idea

The main idea is what the whole text is mostly about.

Ask: "What is this text mostly about?"
Text about different dogs (poodles, retrievers, bulldogs) → Main idea: Dogs make great pets.
